  • Meningitis.

This blog article is an attempt to examine the other disease conditions that can also cause light sensitivity..

Photophobia is an abnormal sensitivity to either artificial or natural light.
The severity of photophobia  are:

1. Mild- which may mean that wearing sunglasses in certain lighting helps your eyes feel better., and that is all you need.

2. Severe – where  you avoid light as much as possible and keep your eyes covered in any lighted environment.  Eye pain is usually involved.

Common Causes of Photophobia.

1. Common causes of photophobia include inflammation of the iris, the cornea, or the conjunctiva (conjunctivitis, or pinkeye), all symptoms of chronic dry eye syndrome.

2. Sudden sensitivity to light that is painful and causes you to close your eyes or to need sunglasses even when you are indoors may be a sign of a serious condition.  This  may mean a problem or inflammation in the muscle that controls the movement of the pupil (iritis).  Fever, stiff neck, and vomiting may indicate a more serious infection in the central nervous system – e.g. meningitis.

If you have eye problems and sensitivity to light, it is very important that you see a health professional right away.
