I have rosacea and have been struggling with a severe chronic dry eye condition, diagnosed by my ophthalmologist nearly two years ago. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is one of the autoimmune disorders. My dry eye problems began last year, I started to notice that when I was driving I was blinking a lot because the light was bothering my eyes. We also moved to the mountains and it is very dry due to high altitude. This further aggravated my dry eyes. In the morning my eyes were stuck with gooey stuff. I could not read for long or watch T.V. because of the constant blinking. I also felt something were in my right eye, I could not wear eye makeup because of the irritation.

I had a bone marrow transplant almost 4 years ago due to leukemia. I ended up with a very bad case of graft vs. host disease where my sister's cells were attacking my soft tissue, skin, mouth and eyes. This has left me with very dry eyes. I virtually had no tears and could not open my eyes without a lot of pain. The graft vs. host has since been treated but my eyes remained very dry. I am a 48 year old woman who was diagnosed with Graves Disease 5 years ago. Graves's disease tends to attack the thyroid gland as well as the eyes. Adrenal Gland Removal and Dry Eyes

I had my adrenal glands removed two years ago. After my surgery I started having extreme pain in my eyes. I saw several doctors, none of whom could figure it out, or give me any good suggestions. (i.e.: one said have Botox treatments around your head for $400. every month so you don't feel the pain.) I felt there HAD to be a relationship between the missing adrenals and the severe pain. One would think that the endocrinologist or ophthalmologist might have considered that. I have finally discovered that ANDROGEN is a hormone produced by the adrenals very necessary for the outer film of the eye. I am now taking an androgen (testosterone) capsule which has helped some, but has not returned my eyes to the pre-surgery state. Perhaps if I took more it would help more; the medication is very costly for me. I have Lots of coarse whiskers and eyebrows! Hey, I would be happy to have a beard if it meant my eyes did not hurt so much! Has anyone else had this situation?
